CALL FOR HELP: Devastating fire leaves 29 displaced at Masinenge, Uvongo

The community has been asked to help the families affected by the blaze.

A fire broke out at Masinenge informal settlement in the early hours of Thursday morning.

No lives were lost, but the fire destroyed 23 units.

The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has praised the swift response by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s firefighters.

“The quick action by the disaster teams prevented the fire from spreading further, potentially saving many lives,” he said.

Buthelezi has directed the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to work with social partners and relevant departments to assist the affected.

Homes destroyed by the blaze.

Ignite Revolution, an outreach ministry, said 29 people are now homeless.

They need the following items to help to assist these families:

  • Blankets
  • Buckets
  • Dishes
  • Non perishable food
  • Towels
  • Clothing
  • Household items
  • Gas stoves

*Buthelezi also urged residents across the province to remain vigilant and ensure that proper measures are in place to protect themselves and their families from such incidents.

  • For fire safety:
    – Keep a bucket of sand or a fire extinguisher nearby to quickly put out small fires.
    – Avoid using open flames for lighting.
    – Ensure that cooking areas are well-ventilated and away from flammable materials.
  • For electrical safety:
    – Do not overload electrical outlets.
    – Avoid using makeshift wiring.
    – Regularly check electrical appliances and wiring for faults.
