Temporary dumpsite creates a stink
It is now illegal to take your refuse and have it dumped at the Marburg Sports Grounds.
The unprotected municipal strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) belonging to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has been ongoing for three months.
Since the strike, there has been no refuse removal from residential or business areas on the South Coast.
As a result, the Marburg Sports Grounds was used as a temporary dumpsite for its residents and businesses. However, within a few weeks, it became an eyesore and a health risk.
Residents living near the temporary dumpsite call on all residents and businesses to stop dumping as the parking lot near the Marburg swimming pool as it has become a haven for flies and rodents, creating a cycle of infestation. This has also attracted a number of ‘paras’ who are scavenging at the site, creating an even bigger mess.
“The stench emanating from the parking area is unbearable. Recently, someone set the dump on fire, and the smell was too much to handle. It being a temporary dumpsite, people took advantage and dumped fridges, mattresses, and garden refuse. This site is only meant for domestic waste,” said a resident.
Selvan Chetty, who coordinates the various ratepayers’ associations, said the temporary dumpsite at Marburg is now closed. He called on all residents and businesses not to dump their refuse there.
He added that he, along with Fathima Moosa from the Marburg Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, will inform everyone where to drop off their waste.
“We will issue notices via WhatsApp groups to where people can take their domestic waste. Once this is done, a team will pick it up and dump it at the Oatlands waste disposal site. For now, keep your refuse at home until the notice has been sent out,” said Selvan.
Last Wednesday, Fathima Moosa said a team is clearing the Marburg parking area off all refuse. “Once the place is disinfected, signs will be posted not to dump, ” said Fathima.
