Crime forum cleans up Tweni

More patrollers are needed to fill the vacant spots in the weekly schedule.

A recent crime prevention beach clean-up yielded some interesting results.

Members of the Tweni Crime Prevention Forum (CPF), assisted by Maser Security, found some makeshift tent-like shelters, clothes, lots of garbage and some cable strippers during the sweep.

Thanks go to Dianne Prepok, the CPF secretary, and members from Umtentweni Improvement Project for helping with the removal of the rubbish.

Looking back on 2024, the Tweni CPF has been committed to keeping the leafy suburb safe.

Makeshift shelters were removed from the coastal bush.

Chairman Beyers Le Roux said two new trail cameras were purchased last year and have proved very useful in some of the identified hotspot areas. The CPF also purchased PPE and vehicle decals for the patrollers.

The CPF members were involved in many special operations, including Raspberry Lane, Ambleside Road, Rethman Drive and in Louisiana.

The patrollers arranged a walk through the bush around Jaydee Lane and the adjacent property and checked on the bag pickers that come into Tweni on Mondays and Tuesdays. Two knives were confiscated during this operation.

A shack was also found near the bowling club, where a known local was brewing alcohol. This was destroyed, and he was issued with a notice from law enforcement.

CPF members were also on standby and did some observations at the toll toad and Astron Garage during the taxi strike, and patrollers manned the toll road and Astron garage in shifts, 24 hours a day in the week leading up to and during the national elections last year.

Le Roux said the forum was involved in the arrest of copper pipes thieves operating in the area and two other arrests of suspects in housebreaking incidents in Tweni, as well as the arrest of a suspect who admitted he was working for a syndicate in Murchison. The case is being investigated by Saps.

“A fantastic mass patrol was held through the streets of Tweni in October last year. Crime levels are very low in Tweni compared to other suburbs on the coast, and this is due to the strong working relationship between the CPF, the security companies, law enforcement and police. Thanks to all who are involved in keeping Tweni safe,” he said.
