A petition has been created ahead of the bail application hearing.

Friends and family of Brad Hughes have started a petition demanding that Darren Govender be denied bail.

The petition has circulated on social media.

In addition, they are petitioning that the case be transferred to the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

Hughes (54) was shot dead at a pub in Shelly Beach on the night of Wednesday, February 12.

Govender (37), an off-duty law enforcement superintendent, handed himself over to police after the incident that same night.

Govender faces charges of premediated murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless use of a firearm in public.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him and remains in police custody.
