KwaXolo schools receive boreholes
Three schools have benefited - Phathwa High, Tholimfundo High and Thobigunya High.
Phathwa High in Gcilima is one of the fortunate schools to receive a borehole which was drilled at a depth of 220 metres.
Inkosi Mxolisi Xolo said the principal, Nokukhanya Ndlela, her colleagues and the governing body came to him for assistance, as there were water challenges at the school.
“Fortunately, as the tribal authority, we have an excellent relationship with a foundation based in Norway, and we asked them if they could help us help the schools in the KwaXolo area.”
Xolo said three schools have benefited – Phathwa High, Tholimfundo High and Thobigunya High.

Rolf Olsen from the KwaXolo Impact Norway Foundation said he has been working in South Africa since 2008.
He said last year, they started to focus on schools because they saw a huge gap pertaining to their needs.
“The schools lack facility and equipment-wise and also support to good quality education, and that is our purpose.”
According to Ndlela, there was a huge water problem in the school.
“Inkosi and the foundation came to our rescue and helped us with the borehole, and we are very excited and grateful. Our learners are also excited; we can happily say that our problem in terms of water is sorted.”
Ndlela said they struggled so much that, on some days, they were unable to cook for the learners because of the lack of water.
On some days, the teachers took buckets to the nearest standpipe to collect water, which was also a challenge because KwaXolo has water challenges.
“We depend a lot on rainwater because we have tanks, but during the dry season, we suffered, and as teachers, we had to take our own cars to source water.”
Ndlela said they will no longer suffer or ever have to worry about not cooking for learners.
