Walk and talk with tree experts
During the walk, a minute of silence was observed in honour of Mervyn Todd, who passed away on February 14 in Port Edward.
A second indigenous tree identification walk along the Admiralty Reserve was hosted by Port Edward’s Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy (UMC) on Monday last week.
Robin Broide of the Munster Conservancy and local indigenous plant fundi Dorothy McIntyre shared their immense knowledge during the well-attended walk.
Helen Ueckermann, vice-chairperson of the UMC, said the trees identified and discussed included the wild plum (Harphyllum caffrum), umzinbeet (Milettia grandis), white milkwood (Sideroxylon inerme), coast coral tree (Erythrina caffra), and common coral tree (Erythrina lysistemon).
“A special thanks to UMC sponsor GP Security, who kept an eye on the parked vehicles and made us all feel safe and protected,” she said.
During the walk, a minute of silence was observed in honour of Mervyn Todd, who died in Port Edward on February 14.
Mervyn was much loved in conservation circles and a founding member of the UMC. Afterwards, a message from Ginger Stilwell, also a founding member, was read in which he shared memories of Mervyn.
