Family’s ‘mode of hope’ goes up in smoke
'There was nothing I could do," said the driver.
A family from Palm Beach lost everything when their vehicle recently went up in flames.
Daniel van den Berg (39) and his fiancée Anita Bezuidenhout (42), said the unexpected event has dramatically affected their lives.
On the day of the incident, they were planning to take their daughter back to Gauteng. So early that morning, they went to Munster to fill up the vehicle. It was on their way back that they saw smoke.

“Five minutes later, the bakkie was burnt out. It all happened so quickly; it was unreal. We had to sit there and watch it burn. There was nothing I could do. I never felt so helpless in my life,” said Daniel.
“I want to thank everyone who helped us on the day.”
He said they had just moved to the South Coast to start over. “We decided to move to the coast as we had lost everything in Gauteng, and our son, Logan, has asthma side effects from Covid-19. He tested positive at six months old in 2022,” he said.
He said the plan was to do transport or a side-line job with the bakkie until they found jobs.
“Now, we can’t do that, so it’s putting strain on the family. Anita has back problems, so she can’t walk too far, and my son is only three years old,” he said.
