Lumko Nohiya, a Grade 10 learner at an Eastern Cape school, rescued a dog and her puppies from drowning during the recent floods in Port Edward.
He spotted the mother, Bonny, an Africanis breed, crying in front of a hole which she had dug up. The entrance was collapsing, and a concerned Lumko suggested to Alida Stofberg, his guardian, to save mom and her puppies.
Also, Lumko suggested that Bonny be placed in the car so he could rescue the puppies, as the hole was filling up with water, and time was running out.
“Bonny did not want anyone near her puppies; Lumko was the only one who could move her from the hole. Once Bonny had been removed, Lumko used his cellphone’s torch and brought four puppies out. It took him a while, but he never gave up,” said Alida.
She added that one of the puppies has since died, but the other three are in perfect health and were put up for adoption at the SPCA. The mother has since been sterilised.
“Lumko is a wonderful boy with a good character. He is observant, has a sense of humour, and he simply loves animals. He is a hero and often helps clean Port Edward Beach. When Lumko finishes school, he wants to farm chicken and vegetables,” said Alida.
