Ugu announces mid-year budget adjustment

The total budget presented was over R1.7 billion with an allocation of over R 395 million for capital budget.

Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, the mayor of Ugu District Municipality, said the mid-year budget adjustment for the current financial year reaffirms a commitment to improve the living standards of communities.

Mqadi said this during his budget speech at a council meeting last Thursday.

He said throughout this financial year, infrastructure investment has been prioritised which includes the implementation of economic reforms, and increasing spending to address key service delivery priorities of water and sanitation services.

“In preparing for this budget adjustment, we have been fully conscious of our legislative mandate, that of provision of water and sanitation in a sustainable environment, and we have ensured that the appropriate resources are allocated to meet these strategic objectives.”

The total budget presented was over R1.7b, with an allocation of over R395m for the capital budget and over R1.3b for the operational budget.

Mqadi said all attempts have been made to accommodate all reasonable requests into the final adjustment budget; however, their financial situation could not allow them to accommodate all requests, which had significant budget implications.

“Therefore, you will notice that in conducting this budget adjustment, we have implemented downward adjustments to ensure that we produce a well-funded and credible budget adjustment.”

Some of the projects to be implemented are Msikaba and Surrounds Water Supply Scheme under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality with a budget of over R7m, the Umzinto Slum Clearance under Umdoni with a budget of R8m and KwaMgayi water project with an allocation of R12m.

Some R1.8m has been allocated to roll out the rural ventilated improved pit toilets to eradicate rural sanitation backlogs across the Ugu District family of municipalities.
