Union negotiates workers’ suspension

A letter issued did not state the timeframe for the suspension.

The South African Municipal Workers Union’s provincial organiser, Menzi Luthuli, says discussions are underway with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality with regard to six employees (including two managers) who were suspended during the workers’ protest in January.

At the time, they received letters that alleged they instigated and participated in an unprotected strike.

However, the letter did not state a timeframe for the suspension.

However, Luthuli said, according to the law, a suspension can be lifted after three months.

“There hasn’t been any investigation or evidence for the suspensions.”

Also, Luthuli said that it was not a strike as workers reported to the main offices every day, which was the right thing to do; they are employed there.

He added that the union will defend their members, and if that fails, they will involve their legal team.

The municipal manager, Khetha Zulu, said that he is unable to comment on disciplinary matters.
