Botanist to launch new book
The book also has a handy plant selector and full-colour photographs with descriptions of ideal growing conditions.
Renowned botanist, landscaper and author Dr Elsa Pooley will discuss her latest book with co-writers Geoff Nichols and Andrew Hankey at Renishaw Hills this Thursday (20th).
The trio has a wealth of local botanical knowledge. Pooley has an illustrious career and is well-known for her definitive tree and wildflower field guides. Nichols is an established plantsman and author, while Hankey – a senior horticulturist at the Walter Sisulu National Botanic Garden in Johannesburg – is a renowned succulent expert.
South African Indigenous Garden Plants: The Gardener’s Guide is a beautifully illustrated, large-format book that showcases around 2 400 South African indigenous plant species, with an overview of landscaping and garden maintenance. An encyclopaedic plant catalogue forms the bulk of the book, with essential guidance on plant selection, feeding and tips.
There’s also a handy plant selector and full-colour photographs with descriptions of ideal growing conditions.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr Pooley for the launch of this valuable gardening book that is already garnering a lot of attention,” said Barto van der Merwe, Renishaw Property Developments.
Pooley will also be attending the illustrious RHS Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom from May 20 to 25. Leon Kluge, designer of the South African stand at the show last year, which achieved a gold medal, best on show, and people’s choice award, is incorporating the new book on the stand this year and has invited Pooley to be at the stand on press day before the show opens to the public.
Also, Renishaw Hills’ residents Kate and Graham Grieve will be launching their book, Botanical Bounty of the Pondoland Centre of Endemism, co-written with Dirk Bellstedt and published by SANBI. This interesting book covers an area that is significant to the KZN South Coast and will also be available on the day.
The launch takes place at the Renishaw Hills Community Centre at about 09:30.
