Municipalities excel at awards

KZN premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasised that these awards recognise innovation, dedication, and excellence in local governance.

Ugu District Municipality was placed first in the province for the most compliant and functional disaster centre at the 2025 Municipal Excellence Awards.

The event, which was held in Durban on Tuesday evening last week, was hosted by Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

The awards recognised achievements in various categories, including good governance, audit outcomes, best Integrated Development Plan, and cleanest town/city.

South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise was placed first for being the best functional district development agency.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality bagged a gold award for the best-implemented project – community works programme.

It also won two more accolades for best performance 2023/2024 budget spent versus targets achieved and best implemented service delivery and budget implementation plan 2023/2024.

Umdoni Municipality won an accolade for expenditure on repairs and maintenance budget in the 2023/24 financial year.

Buthelezi emphasised the importance of municipal services, stating that they recognise the tireless efforts of those who work daily to ensure that communities receive the basic services they deserve, such as water, electricity, sanitation, and roads.

The premier, Thami Ntuli, emphasised that these awards recognise innovation, dedication, and excellence in local governance.

He reiterated the importance of municipalities ensuring effective service delivery and upholding transparency and accountability.

“These awards shine a spotlight on municipalities that go above and beyond in serving their communities. It is through collaboration, dedication, and unwavering commitment that we see such excellence in governance. Municipalities must continue to work diligently to provide quality services and improve the lives of all residents in KwaZulu-Natal.”
