Sky high water bill questioned
The pensioner stated that he has been dealing with this Ugu-related issue since November 2023 and, to date, has received no help to rectify his bill.
Scottburgh pensioner Peter Vos cannot fathom how he and his wife Wendy have incurred an annual water bill of just over R77 000.
Vos stated that he has been dealing with this Ugu-related issue since November 2023 and, to date, has received no help to rectify his bill.
That November, the Ugu bill indicated that the Vos residence allegedly consumed 1403KL. That’s one million 403 thousand litres in just that month.
When Vos first informed Ugu about the incorrect bill, he was told that they were charged according to the meter reading.
“Their Customer Care Department has in the past year required some pictures of the meter – duly supplied – but has never inspected/replaced the meter or the piping, or indeed, ever engaged with our problem,” he said.
“The readings are the readings and are relentlessly repeated, with the ‘outstanding balance’ month after month.”
Vos also mentioned that his residence does not even have a swimming pool, so he cannot understand why massive amounts of water would be consumed.
One theory is that whenever there’s a supply interruption on that road and water is eventually restored, the water rapidly filling up the pipes again could have driven compressed air through the pipes, making the meter spin.
Regardless of what the bill stands at, he explained that he religiously pays Ugu R600 every month.
“I simply hope that someone can sort this issue out before the amount increases even more,” he said.
Ugu was contacted for comment on two occasions. To date, no feedback has been received.
