6 people arrested for Uvongo kidnapping and robbery

A total of eight firearms were recovered.

Six people, including a woman believed to be the mastermind in a kidnapping and robbery case, were arrested on Tuesday last week.

A man (39) was about to get inside his vehicle at his home on Constanz Drive in Uvongo when he was reportedly accosted by a group of men all armed with firearms, and a woman, whom he identified at his former personal assistant (PA) at a municipality he worked for.

According to Saps spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the group grabbed the man and took him inside his house, where they forced him to transfer several thousands of rands into his former PA’s account.

The man was then forced inside his vehicle and the group drove with him to a fuel station on the N2 northbound, and forced him to transfer more money into the same account.

The group then demanded even more money. However, he told them that he had no money left in his account, but was then given a deadline of Tuesday, April 1 for him to transfer the money.

On Tuesday, a tactical operation comprising the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team and Margate detectives, executed an operation and arrested all but one of the group.

The six people, aged between 28 and 41, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
