Local quilts viewed by global audience in Scotland
Good quality quilts can last many years.
Miniature quilts made by South Coast quilters formed part of a medal-winning display at the recent Scottish Quilt Show.
In July last year, internationally recognised quilter John Cole-Morgan of Quilters Legacy Foundation from London, UK, visited Margate, where he was hosted by the Hibiscus Quilt Guild, with teaching sessions held at Margate Retirement Village.
Although born in South Africa, he is now based in the UK, where he has recently taken on the huge project of curating this collection of 369 miniature quilts from South Africa and exhibiting them abroad.
The quilts the locals made formed part of this international project, with John’s the largest gallery on display at the show in Glasgow, where it was seen by more than 11 500 people.
He said he was proud to be able to piece together a competition quilt made up of the first collaboration of underprivileged new quilters and experienced quilters to make a series of miniature quilts.
“It was enriching to know that this group quilt that we made was awarded a bronze in the group category,” he said.
