Repentance

The Biblical meaning of repentance speaks of those who are 'not knowing', that is, they are 'agnoeo'.

LUKE 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

The term repentance has been so wrongly used in many Christian settings that many believers do not know the actual meaning of the word.

Romans 2:4 gives a wonderful example and explanation of what Biblical repentance is. The Biblical meaning of repentance speaks of those who are ‘not knowing’, that is, they are ‘agnoeo’.

They do ‘not know that the kindness of God leads them to repentance’. Repentance in the New Testament means ‘metanoeo’, which is a change in thinking.

How does this term apply to the believer and the unbeliever? To the believer, repentance is the renewing of the mind but to the unbeliever, repentance is a change of mind by believing the gospel of Christ. Since faith in Jesus Christ is all about belief, then the ‘action’ necessary for repentance is not a change of behaviour, but a change of thinking!
