Rocky makes all the right moves

Rocky is expected to be travelling 120km per day.

The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) is happy to report that Rocky the seal is doing well after returning to the ocean.

Since his release at the beginning of March after five months at uShaka Sea World’s rehabilitation unit for stranded and injured marine animals, he has already covered over 2 400km.

Rocky is expected to be travelling 120km per day.

SAAMBR stated that the distance definitely puts him in the ‘professional athlete’ category. He has used the currents to his advantage, which means he is also clever and a great navigator.

It is believed that the young southern elephant seal is heading to the Southern Ocean islands.

* Rocky first appeared at Rocky Bay Beach in the mid-South Coast in October 2024. He was taken in by SAAMBR and kept until he was ready for his release this year.
