Devotees to observe Kavady

Two temples on the South Coast will observe the Chitraparuvam Kavady.

Chitraparuvam Kavady, a Hindu festival is celebrated in the month of Chittirai during the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) on the full moon (Purnima) in South Africa.

The kavady is a pole slung across the shoulders to carry offerings during the celebration, which is a period of prayers and penance for Lord Muruga – a symbol of wisdom and strength.

* The Umzimkuluwana Shree Siva Soobramoniar Temple invites all to its Chitraparuvum Kavady on Monday, May 12 at 07:00, from the temple grounds. For kavady bookings, contact Sureshni Naicker on 082 0742907, or Indresan Pillay on 073 1255431 for further information.

* Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Temple’s Chitraparuvam Kavady continues until May 12. Shree Hanuman Prathanay Kootum (Durban) will render devotional bhajans at the temple this Saturday (10th), with the obayam prayer at 15:00. Kavady bookings are open until this Sunday (11th). On Sunday, the obayam prayer starts at 11:00.

The temple will also observe Narisimha Jayanthi this Saturday, with hawan at 15:00.

* The Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir hosts its Shree Narsimha Dev Jayanti this Saturday (10th) at 15:00. An invocation prayer, recitals, discourses, hawan and bhajans will be rendered. For more information, contact Veena Lakhan on 067 0688282.

* The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Port Shepstone is hosting a street chanting procession on Saturday, May 17 from 10:00. Devotees will start at Chris Hani car park and follow the same route as the Diwali parade. Various Hindu organisations will join the chanting which will end at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre. Devotees from ISKCON’s Durban Temple will be in attendance.

* The Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir will host Shashika Mooruth on June 28 at 16:00. Mooruth is an internationally acclaimed artist.
