Gale-force winds and heavy rain caused severe damage to infrastructure on the South Coast last week, with one person severely injured by a metal roof sheet.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s acting spokesperson, Nomusa Zulu, said about 50% of wards have been affected, however, these still need to be assessed.
“Margate Airport’s roof was damaged including several vehicles in the parking area. The roof of Fascadale Church in Ramsgate was blown away, with no injuries. Households affected are predominantly in Skhaleni, Thokothe, Murchison, Boboyi, Bhuqu, Sangweni and Sgedleni.”

According to Zulu, a man in KwaMadlala was badly injured by a metal roof sheet.
Meanwhile, Ugu District Municipality’s spokesperson, France Zama, said an assessment is still being conducted to determine damage caused to infrastructure and the costs associated with it.
Some areas have been without electricity from Tuesday morning last week, with water supply also affected.

Eskom reported multiple power outages in Harding, Ingeli, Paddock and Kokstad.
The power utility also issued a stern warning to the public to treat all electrical infrastructure as live. People are urged to stay clear of fallen cables, damaged poles, or any exposed wiring, and to report such immediately to local authorities or via Eskom’s reporting channels.

Also, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, MEC Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi, said that Ugu District was hardest hit in the province, and that a number of households, schools, and public infrastructure were severely damaged.
He added that no fatalities were reported.
