Facelift for R102 from Sheppie to Umzumbe

The first section being tackled is between the Mzimkhulu River bridge to the Port Shepstone Country Club

The KZN Department of Transport (DoT) will rehabilitate and resurface the R102 from Port Shepstone to Umzumbe.

The first section being tackled is between the Mzimkhulu River bridge to the Port Shepstone Country Club, which started about a month ago.

The R102 between Port Shepstone and Hibberdene has been long-overdue for rehabilitation. In 2021, Selvan Chetty the then senior leader of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) and chief whip, raised concerns about the management of the roads by DoT Southern KZN.

“On numerous occasions, we alerted the department to various roads posing life-threatening hazards. I am sure that many motorists and residents are glad that this road is finally being attended to,” he said.

DA Caucus chairperson of RNM and Ward 12 councillor, Leon Garbade, said he’s excited about the benefits the rehabilitation will bring to the South Coast.

“The R102 is a long-overdue project that has been eagerly awaited by our community. As a member of the Project Liaison Committee, I am proud to play a role in overseeing this important work. The rehabilitation of this road and the bridge will significantly enhance our infrastructure, ensuring safer travel and improved connectivity.”

He added that the project is not just about the roads, it represents a crucial link to the entire South Coast, acting as the gateway to the north.

“By revitalising this key thoroughfare, we are investing in our community’s future, adding value to local businesses, and enhancing the overall travel experience for residents and tourists alike,” said Leon.

DoT was contacted for further information, but none was received at the time of going to press.
