Zandile Mbokazi blazes a trail as fire chief
Breaking barriers, saving lives - Zandile Mbokazi steps up as the first African woman to lead Ray Nkonyeni Fire and Rescue Services.
Zandile Mbokazi (48) is the first African woman to lead the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Fire and Rescue Services.
Her story is one of passion, courage, and breaking barriers.
Growing up in Msikaba, she always dreamed of becoming a firefighter – even though no one ever told her it was possible for women.
Mbokazi’s passion for helping people was ignited from a young age. She was inspired by her brave, selfless parents – her father worked in the mines and her mother served as a first aider and caregiver.
“My parents often shared their experiences with me. That’s where I got my love for people and community,” she said.
Mbokazi joined the fire department in 2003 as a reservist and was permanently appointed in 2007. Since 2013, she’s worked as a leading firefighter, overseeing fire safety and disaster management.
She holds an honours degree in public administration. Her other impressive qualifications include hazmat awareness, aviation fire safety, rope rescue, disaster management, and more.
But above all, she is driven by the spirit of service.
“Being a firefighter is about selflessness, dedication, and a passion for preventing disaster and saving lives,” she said.
Also, her supportive colleagues have helped her grow throughout her career, and she is excited to embrace new experiences in her role as fire chief.
Her vision includes growing the department, attracting more firefighters, securing more heavy-duty fire engines, and ensuring continuous training and refresher courses.
Municipal spokesperson Nomusa Zulu said the municipality is proud to have Mbokazi in this leadership position. “We have every confidence in her ability to lead this department with passion and diligence.”
As the winter season settles in, Mbokazi warns residents to avoid open flames and to be mindful of smoke inhalation.
