Join beach clean up at Oslo Beach this Saturday
The event is open to all ages, making it a family-friendly opportunity to make a difference.
Roll up your sleeves for a beach clean up at Oslo Beach this Saturday from 09:00. This exciting event will be hosted by Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) Southern KZN, in partnership with Oceanfriendly South Africa, and Surf for Lives.
Oceanfriendly is an organisation run by Taryn Burns of Southbroom and Surf for Life is headed up by former pro surfer, Royden Bryson. They are currently supporting Trafalgar Saints surfers, a group of young surfers from Gcilima.
Wessa’s theme, Stop the Strangle, focuses on one of the ocean’s most silent killers – ghost fishing gear. These abandoned nets, lines and ropes drift at sea long after being discarded, continuing to trap, strangle and kill marine life.
The clean up will not only target ghost gear but also remove plastic waste and other pollutants that threaten marine ecosystems and the coastline. “Every small action counts,” said Paddy Norman, chairman of the Wessa, KZN South Coast branch. “By joining together, we can stop the strangle and keep our oceans alive.”
Organisers will provide bags, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, along with a hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. The event is open to all ages, making it a family-friendly opportunity to make a difference. For more information, contact Taryn on 076 0787189.
