ANC members criticise KZN Finance MEC Francois Rodgers for targeting certain departments
The DA in KZN said it rejected with contempt the attack launched on Rodgers.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has accused the KZN MEC for Finance, Francois Rodgers, of abusing his position by politically targeting ANC-run departments by threatening to place the Department of Transport under administration.
ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team Co-ordinator, Mike Mabuyakhulu, said Rodgers recently placed the Department of Education under administration.
Mabuyakhulu said the party finds the MEC’s utterances repugnant.
“This posture by the DA leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature cannot be left unchallenged because, at its core, it is about how the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) should function,” he said.
The KZN ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has also criticised Rodgers, saying that no piece of legislation empowers him to place any government department under administration.
In a statement, the provincial ANCYL chairperson, Ntokozo Ngcobo, alleged that Rodgers was frustrated by the rollout of socio-economic infrastructure by the transport, human settlements and education departments.
Ngcobo said that the departments were led by ANC members.
“The young and old can attest to job opportunities created through the construction of roads, houses and schools in various corners of the province. On the other side, instead of ensuring the allocation of resources to strengthen service delivery for the benefit of this province, Rodgers is brazenly attempting to weaken the departments through a campaign of misinformation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the DA in KZN said it rejected with contempt the attack launched on Rodgers.
In a statement, the party said the Youth League’s remarks read as a laundry list of objections to good governance, ethical leadership and financial controls imposed by Rodgers on a province that, under the ANC, saw a total collapse of all of these metrics.
“While the ANCYL in the province may protest at the advances the DA is making in the GPU, we will certainly defend our MECs from unwarranted attacks for doing their jobs, no matter how difficult that may be for other parties to accept. The DA in KZN will not relent nor negotiate on ensuring accountability and consequence management for senior officials who continue to ignore treasury regulations and legislation,” read the statement.
