Kayak fisherman dies off Umtentweni beach
The well-known kayaker and fisherman will always be remembered for his vibrant personality.
Kayaker and fisherman Fernando Reginalo Esteves (57), better known as Nino, died while kayaking off Umtentweni last Saturday.
Despite resuscitation attempts by medical teams, Esteves was declared dead on the scene.
Paramedics, together with lifeguards, Saps K9 and security services, responded to the incident last Saturday at around 10:00.
Saps said it was alleged that a group of friends were kayak fishing and were turning around to return to shore when the 57-year-old man fell out of his kayak and was unresponsive in the surf.
“He was brought to shore where CPR was initiated but, sadly, it was unsuccessful. An inquest case has been opened for investigation.”
Friend Jason Vorster said Esteves was an integral part of South Coast Kayakers and was loved by all.
“Whenever you went out on the kayak with Nino you were guaranteed a good laugh. His vibrant personality on the water rubbed off on all of us,” he said.
“He was a great fisherman on the kayak and on land. He would post a video of the conditions on our kayak WhatsApp group most mornings and this really got the guys fired up to go out and fish,” he added.
“To our fallen brother, you will be sorely missed, but not forgotten.”
