Close encounter with a Munster monitor lizard
What is the difference between a water monitor and a rock monitor?
Last week in Munster, resident Corrie Lotter had the pleasure of bumping into a rather impressive creature, a water monitor.
Lotter hadn’t realised before that this is the larger of the two local leguaan species, with the rock monitor being slightly bulkier in comparison.
The differences between the two are quite striking once you know what to look for.
The water monitor has a sharper head and nose, whereas the rock monitor’s head is more stubby and rounded.
Its tail is also distinctive, flattened like a fin to help with swimming, unlike the rock monitor’s more cylindrical tail.
