Closure of Mzimkhulu River mouth continues

The KZN Department of Transport claims that the rehabilitation of the Mzimkhulu River bridge is progressing well.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has assured South Coast residents that the target date for re-opening of the Mzimkhulu River bridge remains December 2.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the rehabilitation is progressing well and that the department is satisfied with the work currently under way.

The contractor is busy closing off the river mouth and trying to divert the water to pillar 9.

New hand rails will be installed.

On top of the bridge, work continues along the parapet on the river side “Critically, our priority is to ensure that Ray Nkonyeni Municipality becomes a destination for international and national tourists this coming festive season. In this regard, the Mzimkhulu River bridge and its surrounding road networks are critical for residents, businesses and visitors. Once complete, the project will improve travel times, road safety and access to economic opportunities,” said Duma.

Further progress will be discussed at a stakeholders’ meeting soon.
