Gamalakhe man unhappy with police investigation
Police said the case is still under investigation.
Gamalakhe resident Musawenkosi Xolo said he is not pleased with the manner in which Gamalakhe police handled his case involving a foreign national.
Xolo said this has prompted him to start a community group that aims to find undocumented immigrants and deport them to their countries.
He explained that this came about after his vehicle was damaged by a truck allegedly driven by a foreigner at the Gamalakhe Lifestyle Centre earlier this year.
“I am unhappy with Gamalakhe police because five months ago I was parked at a shopping centre in Gamalakhe when a truck parked behind me, smashed into my car, not once, but twice,” he said.
He added: “We went to the police station and we filed an accident report. We made an arrangement on how we will pay the excess fee charged by the insurance company. The issue now is that he says he doesn’t want to pay,” he said.
Xolo said that prompted him to go back to the police station to tell them that after the accident report, the other party doesn’t want to pay.
He added said there is no office that he hasn’t been to at the Gamalakhe police station to ask for help.
Xolo said he even went as far as taking the foreigner’s details to confirm with Home Affairs whether he is in the country legally.
“When I found out he was undocumented, I called him asking him to go to the police so that we can resolve this,” he said.
Xolo said his concern was that as a South African citizen, his property was damaged by a non-South African, but the police are failing to assist.
“When this happened, I decided to go to the police, but the very same police are failing me. If I had to take the law into my hands, the very same police would quickly arrest me,” he said.
Responding to the allegations, police said the case is still under investigation by Gamalakhe Detective Service.
They said the suspect was charged on May 9 and appeared in court on May 12, where the case was not enrolled.
“The necessary documents were obtained and the docket will be presented to the public prosecutor for a decision,” said the police.
