A major breakthrough against violent crime was made this week when police in Ugu District, working with private security, arrested four men for possession of a stolen vehicle, unlicenced firearms and ammunition.

The arrests took place yesterday (Wednesday, September 24) after officers and a member of a vehicle tracking company responded to a tracker activation at an address in Uvongo.

“On arrival, the team found four men on the property. A search of the premises led to the discovery of a double cab Ford Ranger hidden in the garage,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza.

The vehicle’s registration number did not match the licence disc. A quick investigation revealed that the bakkie had been stolen in Phoenix in August.

The search did not end there. Police uncovered an alarming cache of weapons:

• An AK47 assault rifle with 106 rounds of ammunition

• An R4 assault rifle with 70 rounds

• A .303 rifle with 12 rounds

• Two pistols with 22 rounds in total

The four suspects, aged between 30 and 41, were arrested on the scene and face charges of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle as well as possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.

They are expected to appear in the Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (September 26).
