Decades of guiding celebrated in Port Shepstone

Decades of commitment, mentorship and community service were celebrated recently as leaders from the Port Shepstone Teddies, Brownies, Girl Guides and Rangers were recognised for their long-standing contributions to the movement.

Among the honourees were Panda Jolene Evans and her mother, Wise Owl Renelda Williams, who each received certificates for an impressive 30 years of service. Continuing the family legacy, Panda’s daughter, Kathlene Evans, was acknowledged for her nine years of involvement.

Across three generations, they have devoted a combined total of about 70 years to Girl Guides.

Also celebrated were Cassandra Govender, Simone Moonsamy, Nova-Lee van der Merwe, Nicola Vancoillie and Jasmin Rajaram, each recognised for five years of dedicated guiding service.

Assistant Teddy Leader Moonsamy said the experience has been transformative.

“Guiding has moulded me into being such an independent woman, and most of all, believing in myself. Women are brought down often, and we don’t always realise our worth. Being involved in Guiding made it clear that I’m not limited, I can reach for the stars.”

Panda said the awards highlight not only years of volunteerism, but also the deep impact of the Girl Guide movement in empowering and shaping confident girls and women across generations.

Jasmin, who previously volunteered at the World Centre, said she remains ‘forever grateful’ to her mentors Panda (Jolene Evans) and Wise Owl Renelda Williams for their guidance and encouragement throughout her Guiding journey.
“I wouldn’t be here at Pax without your guidance and support,” she said.
