Author encourages children to read
Angela Korkee was born and raised on the KZN North Coast and then relocated to Hibberdene on the South Coast.
Teacher and author Angela Korkee has launched her first published children’s book – Come back Bolt.
The book tells the tale of Liam and his cheeky bird Bolt who do everything together. Then one day, Bolt goes missing.
It is then up to Liam to find his best (feathered) friend on a brave and hopeful adventure.
“It is a heart-warming story about love, friendship and never giving up,” explained Korkee.
“The words are simple, allowing young readers to easily grasp the story, and there are beautifully illustrated pictures by another KZN author, Jennifer Carroll.”
The author was born and raised on the KZN North Coast and then relocated to Hibberdene on the South Coast.
She is currently a Foundation Phase teacher (with a Master’s Degree and over three decades of teaching experience) at Curro Soshanguve and travels back to the South Coast during holiday breaks.
Korkee is also a proud mother of three children and two fur babies, and in her free time enjoys being in the kitchen or relaxing on the beach with a good book or good company.
“My love for storytelling runs deep, rooted in a lifelong passion for reading,” she said.
“It is known that the reading statistics for South African children are bad, therefore I am trying to be part of the solution and create reading material using everyday stories and themes to attract children.”
“I want my book to encourage children to read for pleasure and not have them view reading as just a task.”
Korkee has been writing all her life, and Come Back Bolt, was written during a readathon at school in only 10 minutes!
She then chose to reach out to publishers, and after getting in touch with Infinity Tree, her book was published and launched in Sophiatown, Johannesburg on Heritage Day.
“It was an amazing first-time experience to be around a diverse community of authors in a place with rich history,” she added.
“Throughout my publishing process and the launch, I received loads of support from my family, friends and colleagues, and I am so grateful.”
The author is in the process of getting her children’s book recognised more on the South Coast, and will be having author meet and greet events in the near future.
