Inclusivity through sports and games
Addressing the participants, the mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli, expressed her appreciation for the unity and spirit demonstrated by the disability sector.
Umdoni Municipality recently hosted a Disability Sports and Arts Day at the Umzinto Sports Ground.
The event aimed to promote participation, unity and empowerment among those living with disabilities through sport and creative expression.
Various sporting codes were showcased, including soccer, netball, goal ball for the blind, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, chess and Mlabalaba (also known as Morabaraba), a two-player strategy board game played in South Africa and other parts of Africa.
The event was supported by key stakeholders, including the Department of Health, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the Independent Electoral Commission, which shared valuable information and programmes tailored to persons with disabilities.
Addressing the participants, the mayor Mbali Cele-Luthuli, expressed her appreciation for the unity and spirit demonstrated by the disability sector.
“My office is open to everyone, and especially to persons with disabilities, who have long been marginalised before government began to prioritise their inclusion,” she said.
“If there are funding needs or any requests related to the disability sector, my office remains committed to assisting wherever possible. Always remember, the sky is the limit, you may be differently abled, but you are capable of achieving your dreams and living fulfilling lives.”
Participants were grateful for being part of an inclusive environment on the day that promoted equal opportunities.
