WEATHER WARNING: KZN on high alert as severe weather system approaches
Authorities noted that similar systems have previously caused serious destruction. In April 2022, a comparable cut-off low resulted in widespread flooding, significant infrastructure damage and loss of life.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has cautioned residents to prepare for severe weather conditions as Level 2 and Level 4 warnings come into effect from Saturday, November 15 through Monday, November 17.
In a statement, COGTA confirmed that the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued concurrent alerts as a cut-off low pressure system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds across large parts of the province.
For the South Coast, a Level 4 warning has been issued for Kokstad, while a Level 2 warning applies to the Ray Nkonyeni and Umdoni municipalities.
MEC for COGTA, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, urged residents to prioritise safety and remain vigilant.
“We advise residents to limit travel and avoid crossing low-lying bridges. Disaster management teams are on standby in all affected municipalities to respond to any incidents that may arise,” he said.

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre has been activated and all municipal disaster management units placed on high alert. COGTA is coordinating efforts with several key stakeholders, including the KZN Department of Transport, KZN Department of Social Development, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), municipal traffic services, SANRAL and Eskom, who are prepared to respond to road closures, power outages and possible infrastructure damage.
Authorities noted that similar systems have previously caused serious destruction. In April 2022, a comparable cut-off low resulted in widespread flooding, significant infrastructure damage and loss of life.
Potential hazards over the coming days include flooding of homes and low-lying areas, severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, hail and lightning, disruption to essential services, and dangerous road conditions with reduced visibility.
Residents are urged to monitor official updates from SAWS and KZN COGTA, follow instructions from local authorities, and report emergencies to their nearest disaster management centre.
