Umbango River Conservancy caps a year of conservation
The annual general meeting provided vital information regarding conservation within Port Shepstone.
Various environmental issues affecting the South Coast and a call for all to play a role in protecting it, was highlighted at Umbango River Conservancy’s (URC) AGM at Gate Ministries in Albersville recently
Guest speaker and former magistrate, Johann Bester, focused on the deadly threat of the ecological destruction of rivers. He stated that riparian zones are under serious threat from expanding neighbourhoods, urban and agricultural, which are leading to extensive destruction.
He added that the growing population, insufficient maintenance and upgrading of sewerage and storm water pipes, random pollution by industries, and careless business practises all contribute to the degeneration of the Umbango River.
Bester encouraged citizens to play a role in protecting the river and the environment.
The meeting was blessed with a quorum and fair response from the community. At present the conservancy consists of 32 members, with new members pledging their support.
The executive members are: Morgan Naidoo – chairperson, Sivy Kalkapersad – vice-chairperson. Nirvana Manawar – secretary, Sanjay Juglall – treasurer and Venny Naicker – assistant secretary.
The conservancy thanks all individuals and organisations that support it.
