Flamingo rescued at Leisure Bay euthanised after severe injury

CROW continues its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and protect local wildlife.

A flamingo seen frequenting the Leisure Bay Lagoon in recent days was found on the beach with a severely broken leg.

A member of the Leisure Bay Conservancy discovered the bird on the beach and immediately contacted the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (CROW) dedicated South Coast depot volunteer, Lynne Crocker, who rushed to assist. She safely transported the flamingo to Margate Vet for urgent assessment.

Lynne Crocker immediately to the rescue.

Despite every effort, the injury was too severe, and the kindest option was to humanely euthanise the bird.

Denika Govender, CROW spokesperson, said that while the outcome wasn’t what they hoped for, they are grateful to the community for their swift action and to Lynne, the member of Leisure Bay Conservancy and Margate Vet for their compassion and professionalism.

Sadly, the injury was too severe to save the flamingo.

CROW continues its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and protect local wildlife, and encourages community support for its ongoing rescue work.
