Swimmer raises over R7000 for NSRI Shelly Beach
The community offered support and some waited at the finish in Margate.
Christo van Rooyen (29) swam 7.9km from Shelly Beach to Margate to raise funds for NSRI Shelly Beach recently.
He took to the ocean at 08:00 and reached Margate about three hours later.
Christo said that he had been planning to do the swim for the past two years, but could not because he had to make sure he was ready and fit.

Two boats along with a Med-Evac team followed him, making sure that he was safe and had a few breaks.
The community was also present to give him support and some waited for him in Margate to welcome him at the finish.

“The sea conditions were not too bad, it was a good swim and I paced it.”
He thanked all the sponsors that helped him raise funds. Some R7 100 was raised on the day.

Lovely raffle prizes were up for grabs: first prize was a one night stay for two at Umthunzi Hotel, Umtentweni; second prize was a fishing trip on Sensational Magic and the third prize was a R500 voucher for The Waffle House.
Christo added that he will swim again next year, and hopes for more support.
