Art-in-the-Park exhibition to launch in Uvongo
There will be a tree planting ceremony to celebrate this event.
The long awaited open air Art-in-the-Park exhibition will be launched this Saturday (7th), from 09:00 till 15:00.
This will be at the quaint park-like area between the Uvongo Spar and the iVungu River bridge. All artworks on exhibition will be available for sale, and it is also an opportunity to meet and chat to the artists themselves.
The South Coast is blessed with over 100 active artists. Johann du Toit, the initiator of this Uvongo Art-in-the-Park event, says that he has been approached over the years by so many artists who spoke about the difficulty of finding forever homes for their completed artworks.
Staging a solo exhibition and exhibiting paintings at an art gallery are not viable options for the majority of artists due to the costs of framing, venue hire, commissions payable and the fact that their paintings might be “out of circulation” for a lengthy period.
“This is when I realised that artists need a highly visible spot where they can exhibit on a regular basis, which doesn’t cost an arm and a leg; thus the establishment of a regular Art-in-the-Park event was a logical option,” says Johann.
He identified the vacant park-like area bordering the northern side of the iVungu River bridge and Uvongo Falls as an ideal venue.
When he approached the municipality, he was pleasantly surprised that the area was provided free of charge to be utilised for monthly art exhibitions. This means that artists can exhibit without paying a cent! Consequently this cost saving will no doubt result in a beneficial spin off for buyers and art collectors.
On the launch date there will be a tree planting ceremony in the park by the mayor to celebrate this event, which has the potential to grow into a tourist attraction of note.
