Joy and colour reign at Holi festival in Port Shepstone
Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates love and renewal.
Holi, the festival of colours was celebrated at the Shree Hanuman Sanathan Dharma Sabha Mandir with joy, love, colour and happiness last Saturday.
The festivities started with a lovely programme with songs, dance, and not forgetting a dance item by Pundit Ram Rai and his wife Lata who made the function extra special. Guest were kept well entertained with Bollywood dancer Akshay Ranjith.
Soon afterwards, devotees walked around a bonfire ‘Holika Dahan’ which is part of the Holi festival celebrations. This ritual is symbolic of victory of good over evil. Soon music filled the air, and both young and old covered themselves from head to toe in brightly coloured powders in celebration of this Hindu festival. Devotees were also kept on their toes with good music by deejay Reevek.
“It was a night well observed and those that attended enjoyed tasty biryani and soji. Although it rained a little, it couldn’t dampen the spirits and the festivities went on. Thanks to all members and guests for allowing us to experience our culture, also giving the younger generation a sense of belonging. Our culture has so much to teach and it’s times like these that we see our community come together in numbers to celebrate. Well done to all who made this event a success,” said chairperson Veena Lakhan.
