Port Shepstone policeman bids farewell after 4 decades of service
Captain Cecil John Kodi built strong relationships with the Port Shepstone community and forged valuable partnerships with local businesses.
The name Captain Cecil John Kodi is synonymous with policing in Port Shepstone, particularly in Umtentweni, where he played a key role in successful sector policing initiatives.
He retired from Saps Port Shepstone on May 28.
Kodi said his love for the police uniform began in childhood, inspired by a belief that police officers were there to help others. Values of loyalty, honesty and impartiality instilled during his upbringing shaped both his character and career.
Kodi joined the Saps at the age of 19 in 1986 as a student constable in Gauteng. After completing his training, he was stationed at Durban Central before being transferred to the Port Shepstone Accident Unit. There, he gained valuable experience attending serious accident scenes and working long hours, preparing him for the challenges of a policing career.
In 2005, he moved to Saps Port Shepstone VISPOL Crime Prevention, where he played a significant role in leading and mentoring younger officers. Known for his calm leadership style, he earned the respect of colleagues and management alike.
Over a career spanning four decades, Kodi witnessed many changes within the organisation, particularly at Saps Port Shepstone. He remained a loyal supporter of station management and the Ugu District while becoming a trusted source of advice and guidance for fellow officers and those beginning their policing careers.
He also built strong relationships with the Port Shepstone community and forged valuable partnerships with local businesses. While raising his daughters and serving the community, he earned a reputation for being reliable, humble and always willing to help.
His dedication was recognised through several honours, including the Saps Medal for Faithful Service, the Centenary Medal and the Saps 75th Commemorative Medal.
Saps wished Captain Kodi a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement and thanked him for his loyal service.
As an avid fisherman and outdoor enthusiast, he now looks forward to spending time on local beaches, keeping fit and tackling DIY projects.
