From the Couch: Cup is back where it belongs

The men in black and white have renamed Cape Town 'Sharkstad'.

THE Currie Cup is back where Sharks fans believe it should be – in KwaZulu-Natal. And what a match. The only thing better than beating the Bulls at Loftus is beating Western Province at Newlands, and that’s what the Saaks, as Ashwin Willemse says, did last Saturday, in emphatic fashion, 33-19, which messed up my SuperBru prediction.

We settled in to watch at King George’s Park. That would be the father-in-law George’s lounge. I had to compete for a spot on the couch with three super-charged, gas-emitting Boston Terriers, but the little runts were at least kitted out in black and white, although not by choice – they were born that way.

Fortunately King George is a rugby nut, having provided some front row grunt in his day.

He’s a man of few words, but even he had to speak up when the mother-in-law drifted in front of the TV while Pat Lambie was lining up a kick.

Pat missed the kick and of course it was mother-in-law’s fault. How on earth can he kick properly if there are women folk moving around at crucial moments. If it was to bring biltong that might be understandable, but it wasn’t.

But if we (he) didn’t pipe down we (he) would be making our (his) own supper… and I was guilty by association!

Fortunately Lambie got his act together and started knocking over his kicks. And the mother-in-law ‘saw the light’ when she realised it was the Currie Cup final. And as the scoreline increased and supper arrived, the mood of the spoilt rugby fans just got better.

The father-in-law is not a football fan though, and so I had to check the Liverpool score on my phone. Suarez the Hated was on top form as they smashed West Brom.

Arsenal got lucky against Crystal Palace. This Saturday Liverpool take on Arsenal. Should be an easy game.

Manchester United spoilt the perfect day by scoring twice in the last 12 minutes to win against Stoke City. Their ‘fight-back-ability’ is rather annoying.

Speaking of Man United, there are some disturbing similarities so far between the 1921-22 season and the 2013-14 season. In both seasons Man U hired a Scottish manager, was beaten 4-1 away by City, lost by one goal to Liverpool, drew 0-0 with Chelsea, lost to West Brom at home by a goal, beat Sunderland, the eighth match ended 1-1. In 1921-22 Manchester United got relegated… will it happen this season? Um, no.
