WE have spoken long and hard about the technicalities of running so I thought I would share some hints and tips I have learned from seasoned runners. Remember these are purely opinion so take what works for you.
Running with a friend – it is a difficult decision to make. You only run Comrades once a year and most of the early mornings and sacrifices have been for Comrades so be selfish. Make a gentleman’s agreement that you don’t wait for each other. Your dips and highs never come at the same time so take the pressure off and run for yourself.
Water – we often get asked how much to consume. Take at least 250-500ml in every hour depending on how hot it is. A good indicator is how often you are required to stop for a toilet break. If your urine appears yellow, drink more!
Clothes – start Comrades with an old, long sleeve shirt and be happy to throw it away to willing spectators along the route. Many runners use black bags but I suggest not as these, when disposed of, are dangerous to other runners.
Sewing your number on your vest – I suggest a pouch be created by not sewing the full top side of the number. Store toilet paper in a bank bag with any other natural medicines you may need. Run with as little medical assistance as possible – it is better for you.
Water tables – drink at every second or potentially third if you can. Use water at every table to rinse your mouth and splash your hot spots.
Eating on the run – each as much as your body allows. Oranges are a good to suck the juice out of and bananas are a great source of energy. I don’t suggest eating biscuits or chocolates. Stick to jelly babies and potatoes and bananas. I prefer to eat from halfway.
Pain killers – no pain pills should ever be used, no pain no gain.
Supplements – Vitamin E, magnesium and Vitamin C are all good supplements amongst others. B Complex and B6 in heavy training is recommended.
Feet – an alternative to socks if you blister can be two pairs of stockings over each other, cut short and rolled to the ankle. You will be amazed at the result.
Toenails – cut them short and file them down at the end. If you still feel like it is pushing against your shoe and causing discomfort, do not be afraid to cut a hole in your shoe.
Hat – it is not ideal to cover your head totally on the top. All your body heat escapes through this area.
Cramping – spend your time concentrating on supplements to avoid cramping rather than stopping at the physio stations on the day. This will cost you time.
Hope these tips help!
