Speakers’ Corner: Try something new

There is concern that electronic communication will replace the beloved newspaper.

SPEAKERS’ Corner held its 299th meeting recently and it was as lively as ever, with a toast to the new year. All were urged to put aside the past and try something new – age doesn’t matter.

A member born in 1932 told of her life in South Africa. When she married she had three children, but her husband died suddenly at a young age. Later on she married a man who had three children and then together they had one more, so it was a big family. When all the ‘chicks’ had left the nest, she and her husband came down to the South Coast. She is now widowed again, but is making the most of her life including starting computer lessons!

Having a hive of bees removed from in the ceiling was an interesting experience and the speaker learned a lot about these intelligent creatures. The bees were sucked out with a vacuum cleaner and taken to a macadamia farm.

Lovers of newspapers are concerned that their numbers are decreasing because of the electronic ways of communicating available today, but most members present, being of the older generation, admitted to loving the feel of papers and books and hoped they would survive.

A tip for pain sufferers at night is to put a potato in the bed. Some people swore it worked. Can anyone explain this?

The next meeting, which will be the 300th, will be on February 18 in the activities room of Uvongo Library at 9.30am and everyone is welcome. There will be free refreshments, but donations to the SPCA are requested. For further information contact Beryl Lakin at 039 3150464.
