Hooked on Fishing: Shad are on the bite

There's been some excellent fishing on the South Coast.

THE shad made a very welcome appearance last weekend with almost every shad spot producing good catches.

Margate pier seemed to be one of the hotspots, producing a nice-sized kingfish on live shad on Sunday morning.

The main beach at Port Shepstone was also full of anglers over the weekend, with most anglers getting their quota of shad.

Garrick still seem to be very scarce, however reports from the Transkei are that these fish seem to be moving up the coast.

The current is still running reverse (south to north) which is allowing some good off-shore bottom fishing to be had.

Craig Treherne returned with a yellowbelly rock cod of 19.6kg.

This fish was caught using a vertical jig which just proves how versatile this method is and the diversity of fish that can be caught.

The small bonito are still in abundance on Protea Banks and hopefully these will attract the larger predatory fish to the area.

Fish activity in the area is starting to spell out sardines. Some interesting catches have been made with two yellowtail kingfish raising eyebrows as this species is normally only caught in the area during or pending a sardine run.

Trawlers were reported being seen out at sea between Port St Johns and here during the week and it would seem that only bombs and torpedoes could keep them away.

Remember the size and bag limits and you will stay out of trouble.
