Hooked on Fishing: Local ‘Sharks’ to take on visiting ‘Lions’

Fishing hasn't been great, and the shad are scarce.

STRONG wind and big seas have basically ensured that very little fishing has taken place over the last week, both from the shore and off-shore and, with extremely strong south-westerly winds forecast for this weekend, it does not look like much fishing will be had in the near future.

The annual Sharks vs Lions (locals vs upcountry) takes place at The Hole in the Wall this weekend. This is a competition held annually by anglers on a ‘by invite only’ basis, which has been running for about the last 10 years.

Fishing is from Thursday to Saturday, so hopefully on their return we will have some good reports as to what is happening in that area.

During the last postal rock and surf competition, Ockie Schonken, fishing for Glenmore Angling Club, landed a pignose grunter at Mhlugwane, at the Hole in the Wall.

This is a magnificent fish to land, especially when done on light tackle, fishing for a shad.

The odd shad is still being taken when conditions allow, however the big concern at the moment is the lack of shad for this time of the year, if one thinks back to years gone by.

Shad were prolific at this time of the year, hence the closed season which was introduced as of September 1.

Nowadays the closed season has been moved to October 1 and is only closed for two months of the year.
