IT must be absolute purgatory for young people to grow up in and around Scottburgh.
No wonder our patch has the tag: “God’s Waiting Room.”
Granted, the schools try their best to keep young minds occupied, but what about the down time?
Of course we have sun, sea and surf, but surely too much of that makes Jack a dull boy… and eventually a beach bum.
We read lots about more adult entertainment like bingo, bowls and golf. There are several fun clubs, pubs and restaurants.
Meanwhile, kids join a karate club or watch junk on TV.
Gone are the days when they could freely roam around on bicycles, fish, skinny dip, climb trees and play ‘war games’ with ‘claylats’ in secret spots.
Basically all they can do today is look forward to the odd family outing or just entertain themselves at home.
There is abuzz at the moment about a proposed multi-billion-Rand eco-estate where people can “work, live, eat, play and rest”, according to Sharron McPherson who is the executive chairperson of the developers, Wedi International.
Umdoni Municipality has also announced its intentions to give the Scottburgh beachfront a makeover.
With all this in the pipeline, surely our youth deserves some consideration as well and the brilliant minds behind the proposed developments can come up with some unique ideas for our youngsters that will put the fun back into living here.
Are we exaggerating? We would love to hear from our younger readers.
