Mum on the Run: My ‘Indian’ pregnancy

There are mixed emotions in the family at the moment.

MY colleagues are convinced I am having an Indian baby. I will explain why a little later on.

Firstly, I can’t believe that I am already six months pregnant.

It seems like yesterday that the doctor informed my husband, Mlungisi, and I, that we were going to have another baby.

Our reaction was: ‘Are you serious?’

Was it planned? Oh no!

Another baby was the last thing on my mind. Plans for 2015 were to study towards a degree in communications.

However, a baby is a blessing from God. And we have embraced the idea of adding another member to the Jili family, even if means having to get a bigger place to stay.

This pregnancy has been much easier for me than my first one.

When I was pregnant with my first baby (Elihle, who is now three years old) I did not know what to expect.

There was the morning sickness and nausea to deal with, for sure. And nothing would stay down… except for, believe it or not, liver and cabbage, which become my staple food. I now feel sick just thinking about it.

This pregnancy has been much easier, no morning sickness and no hectic cravings.

But it must be said, I am particularly enjoying spicy food, like breyani, samoosas and bunny chows.

This is why my colleagues reckon Baby 2 is Indian! I am so grateful to my Indian friends who provide an endless supply of goods to satisfy my spicy cravings.

Besides the insomnia, moodswings, tiredness and heat, it is quite exciting knowing that I have a life growing inside me.

My little angel has started kicking, and I feel this special connection between us when she does.

The gynaecologist has confirmed we are having another girl. Even though we were hoping for a little brother for Elihle, we still look forward to having another princess in the family.

The grandparents are excited about the arrival of their second grandchild, but we do not know how Elihle feels about it yet.

Elihle…. that’s another story. We have no idea if she understands that she is getting a little sister.

We have tried to explain it as best we can. I don’t know if she likes the the idea of having someone else steal her spotlight, but I am sure she will come around by the time the baby is born!
