My Take: Lasting legacy under threat

The reserve needs money to maintain it, to help keep the alien plant invaders at bay and keep it safe for us all to enjoy.

TC ROBERTSON Nature Reserve is truly a Scottburgh gem.

Shame on us all for letting it fall on hard times.

Shame on us all for not doing our bit to help the remaining few, passionate volunteers to keep it open and running smoothly.

Sadly, the reserve is now forced to close on Mondays and Thursdays because there just isn’t enough money to pay the necessary people.

Without some control, TC Robertson would be left to alien invaders, vagrants, vandals and even criminals.

Past sponsors, Umdoni Municipality, the Department of Agriculture… even townspeople seen to have forgotten about this piece of unspoilt paradise in the heart of Scottburgh which has been giving countless people pleasure virtually “forever”.

There are few towns and even cities that can boast about such a facility so close to home, a magnificent habitat for birds and small buck, a fine example of conservation for our youth and a peaceful spot for a picnic.

But the reserve needs money to maintain it, to help keep the alien plant invaders at bay and keep it safe for us all to enjoy.

If you don’t have the spare cash, offer services in kind and volunteer. How about service clubs like Rotary, Round Table, Lions, PROBUS and others getting involved and even using the reserve’s building for meetings? (For a small fee, of course.)

Schools need to get more involved and ask parents to cough up a donation for excursions to the reserve. How many of our children know what is or is not an indigenous plant or tree? Surely we want them to know this?

So, it’s a case of all hands on deck or just throw TC Robertson open to the ‘wolves’.
