Daily Devotion: His gift of diversity

Celebrate your gifts, but remember where they come from.

MY husband and I awoke in the middle of the night and found ourselves talking about the differences between our respective sisters. Believe me, there is much to contrast! Then we chuckled about the differences between his family and mine. We come from such diverse backgrounds, how did we ever find each other?

Our Lord proclaims diversity as bountiful and good – within families, churches, and communities. Yet many struggle with His gift of diversity, and do so in peculiar ways. Some are suspicious – fearing the gift rather than praising God for sending it. Others celebrate the gift but forget Who sends it – claiming it to be a secular right rather than a right founded on scripture.

And so often these struggles accompany us everywhere – including the workplace.

Do you come to work suspicious of His gift of diversity? Do you celebrate it for the wrong reasons? Or, do you come to work, fearlessly celebrating the miracle of differences among coworkers – every nation and tribe and people and language – all made in His image and all giving strength to the one body?

At work today, look around and look within. Celebrate His gift of diversity. Take that celebration with you at the close of the workday. Carry it always in your heart.

Celebrate His gift of diversity – for soon, we will stand together in front of the Lamb.

Reading

1 Corinthians 1:12 (NLT) The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.

Revelation 7:9(a) (NLT) After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb.

Prayer

Lord, at work today, teach me to celebrate the uniqueness and strength of Your gift of diversity. Then let Your teachings accompany me after work. Let me carry always these teachings and share them freely wherever I go. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
