You and Your Health: Boost your immune system

It's a good idea to eat certain foods to fight off sickness.

IT appears as though the dreaded ‘flu bug is flexing its little bug muscles already! Most of my family have been struck down already as well as numerous others I know that are suffering in various stages.

Every year a new ‘flu vaccine is launched. As far as I know, the latest vaccine has been ‘updated’ already due to the new strain that is hitting our shores. While I don’t recommend those with frail immune systems, certain medical conditions and those who work in environments where they could be prone to catching ‘flu, not getting the vaccine, I can say that I personally don’t opt for the vaccine.

One should not get confused between common cold and ‘flu symptoms. While many symptoms are similar for both, such sneezing, coughing, low grade fever etc, people with ‘flu will also experience body pain, headaches, weakness and severe fatigue, rapid heart beat etc. If you are unsure, please see your GP as soon as possible.

The ‘flu germ is spread through body fluids. While it may sound gross, people are coughing, sneezing and spitting around us constantly. Every time that happens, fine droplets are sprayed around and land on surfaces such as door handles, shop counters and such things. The next time you touch one of these surfaces and proceed to scratch your nose or eyes, you will ingest that germ.

There are some basic things that one can do to limit your chance of developing ‘flu however. These precautions include –

* Washing your hands regularly with plain soap and water.

* Dry your hands on paper towels (and then dispose of it carefully), not public towels or air dryers.

* Don’t kiss or shake hands with someone who appears to be infected. If you do, wash your hands immediately before touching your face.

* Be aware of others exhibiting symptoms of ‘flu around you and keep your distance.

In my opinion, probably the best thing to do is boost your own immune system. We have been provided with an amazing immune system that can readily help to protect us from most germs we come in contact with. Apart from a healthy, balanced diet and correct hydration, some supplements that I have found exceedingly helpful for myself include –

– Vitamin C in a sustained release form and derived from a wholefood source. Scientific tests have shown this type of Vitamin C to be more effective than a simple ascorbic acid or synthetic C.

– Chelated zinc is essential in boosting the immune system. Minerals are better absorbed and utilized by the body in a chelated form.

– Carotenoid complex is a fat soluble antioxidant and again, should be sourced from a food source, not a synthetic source and contain a broad spectrum of carotenoid rich foods.

– Flavanoid complex is a water soluble antioxidant that enhances the effect of Vitamin C and protects the finer tissues in our system such as sinus, lungs, eyes and nasal passages.

While this is just a very brief outline, it should at least help as a guide. I am a registered distributor for a well-known, whole-food nutritional range. I would be more than happy to discuss your individual needs with you, but you can also chat to your GP or a nutritionist.

As always, my aim with these articles is to simply educate you on a way to improve your health naturally. I will not make any medical claims and I will try my best to remain neutral as far as specific branded products are concerned.

Psalm 41:3 The LORD will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health.

Be blessed.
