Hooked on Fishing: Keep those eyes peeled for sardines

A lot of anglers are mistaking weed for sardines because of the enormous amounts around.

SHAD are still on the bite, but have, however, slowed down a bit due to the flat and clean seas and no wind. Again the most productive areas are the Margate and Uvongo piers and although Ski-boat Bay in Shelly Beach has also been productive, seaweed is still thick.

The best fishing times seem to be the crack of dawn when shad come on the bite for an hour and disappear. The majority don’t quite make size, but the odd bigger one does make an appearance.

The ‘spearos’ are still seeing shoals of garrick, with one or two being shot and on the points and piers, guys are still having some fun catching the odd garrick, kob and black-tip kingies on live baits. A few sharks have been hooked at night and an awesome yellowfin tuna was landed at the pier last Sunday on a live shad. Congratulations to the angler, a yellowfin tuna is definitely a fish to remember.

The sardines are still way up north with a lot of activity and netting in the Umkomaas and Park Rynie areas daily, but nothing on our coast. However, Monday’s good news was that Campbell Shaw was surfing in amongst a nice shoal of sardines, which he at first mistook for seaweed until he got closer and clearly saw the silver fish.

It is great news that sardines are still around and I can bet a lot of anglers are mistaking them for weed because of the enormous amounts around. Keep your eyes open, guys.
