Hooked on Fishing: Shad and garrick activity slows

A good tip for holidaymakers - pinkies are a great live bait for garrick and kingies on conventional tackle.

FISHING has been very slow over the past week and shad have definitely slowed down a lot. There are still a few being caught at the crack of dawn although a lot of them don’t quite make size.

Even garrick are not as plentiful as they have been during the last two weeks, but a few have been caught, proving that being in the right place at the right time will reap rewards. Still, most garrick are being taken out at ‘the Block’ in Sheppie and some guys are having fun with lighter tackle. There are rumours of some nice grunter being landed as well!

AK Hoosen landed a much better sized garrick (around the 12 to 14kg mark) at the Uvongo pier earlier this week using live shad. With August approaching, it means that the ‘hot’ time for garrick is almost here, so definitely have the live bait traces and plugs ready.

There are an incredible amount of ‘peckers’ around (mainly pinkies), but they are some of the biggest seen. A good tip for holidaymakers – pinkies are a great live bait for garrick and kingies on conventional tackle, with no need for live bait traces. Use a standard ground trace with a 2/0 hook through the lips or eyes of the pinkie and cast out – not far at all. Give it a try.

Sardines have once again only been spotted up north, which does not bode well for the South Coast area. We can only but hope since it is not too late yet. Once again guys – be safe and tight lines!
